Our Appeal for a Brighter, Safer New Year

As the New Year begins, we have a special opportunity to double our impact for lasting peace in Iraq. Two generous EPIC supporters have agreed to match all gifts up to $15,000!

With this opportunity, you can help make 2x the impact in 2021.

In Sinjar, we are empowering community-based activists to use creative story-telling and change strategies to address critical issues in their communities. After a series of workshops along with ongoing mentoring by our team, the activists are now moving ahead with their projects.

Here are just a few. Talie, a young woman with a disability rights group, is launching a campaign for Sinjar’s first-ever crosswalk and painting murals to raise awareness about public safety. Rakan, a young man with a youth organization, is creating videos about Yazidi religious traditions to fight misperceptions about his community. Nasema, a young female activist, is organizing art/drawing sessions for women to connect with other trauma survivors.

We look forward to sharing more of their stories and projects in the New Year.

In Mosul, EPIC is fighting the global pandemic. Alongside our long-time partner, the Iraq Health Access Organization, we are supporting two of the city’s largest hospitals, the Salam Hospital and al-Shifa Hospital Center.

The two hospitals are currently seeing more than 350 COVID-19 cases each week, including patients requiring ventilators. Before our intervention, neither hospital had received any training on COVID-19. But thanks to supporters like you, we have provided a series of enhanced IPC (Infection Prevention and Control) trainings for fighting COVID-19 and we are providing ongoing technical support for the hospitals’ doctors, nurses, and cleaning staff. We also delivered personal protective equipment (PPE) and disinfectant cleaning supplies, addressing chronic shortages at both hospitals.

Your matching gift will strengthen our humanitarian response in the New Year as we work to ensure that Mosul’s health workers continue to receive the vital support they need to stay safe, fight COVID-19, and save lives.

In Baghdad and across Iraq, we’re undertaking a year-long study of Iraq’s nonviolent protest movement and prospects for democratic reform. Since capturing international attention in October 2019, the movement has forced a change of government and the scheduling of early elections. Extremist factions of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMFs) have retaliated by waging a campaign of intimidation, kidnappings, and assassinations, killing and forcibly disappearing dozens of activists, journalists, lawyers, and other citizens.

Through our research, we are working to place human rights and the urgent need for government accountability and reform at the center of the policy discussion on Iraq.

During this important time of giving back, please consider making a year-end contribution to EPIC.

From responding to humanitarian needs in Sinjar to fighting COVID-19 in Mosul to defending human rights for all Iraqis – your gift is a critical part of what makes our lifesaving work possible.

Together, you and I — and our dedicated EPIC staff in the U.S. and Iraq — can make a lasting impact in Iraq. Please make your gift right now.
