Iraqis are working hard to repair their communities after the devastation of war. EPIC is helping them strengthen skills in political advocacy and social media strategy to build bridges across social divides.
- We are hosting an advocacy training series for grassroots leaders in the Ninewa Plains in local political engagement to help their communities advocate for their needs in a complex political environment.

Advocacy skills training
The Ninewa Plains is home to a diverse mixture of social, national, religious and sectarian communities, including Christians, Yazidis, Kurds, Arabs, Shabaks, Kaka’i Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites.
This diversity has been a factor in the conflicting interests of political and armed groups in the region. Because of its location, resources, and diversity, the region is also exposed to power struggles between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government, as well as interventions by external actors.
The Ninewa Plains is home to a diverse mixture of social, national, religious and sectarian communities, including Christians, Yazidis, Kurds, Arabs, Shabaks, Kaka’i Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites.

Because of its location, resources, and diversity, the region is also exposed to power struggles between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government, as well as interventions by external actors.
As a result, citizens in the Ninewa Plains suffer from human rights violations and restricted political representation. They also face economic difficulties from war, underdevelopment, and reduced agriculture because of severe droughts.
Our project is helping citizens analyze the problems they face, develop policy papers to propose solutions, and implement conflict-sensitive advocacy campaigns to advocate for their needs.

digital peacebuilding in Sinjar
We are working to expand our digital peacebuilding pilot project that trained a cohort of community leaders in Sinjar, the site of a genocide committed by the Islamic State in 2014.
Participants designed social change projects, and learned about social media content production and audience growth strategies in a four-part interactive workshop.
Their original projects ranged from a peer support group for female survivors to Sinjar’s first-ever crosswalk to raise awareness about residents with disabilities. Watch the videos created by participants.
